NetBait Micro-Deployments™ FAQ

What is a Micro-Deployment?
Utilization of NetBait's Enterprise infrastructure to execute specific tasks on any given network.

Why are they called "Micro-Deployments?"
Because these solutions are derived from the common NetBait technology platform. Whereas NetBait Enterprise is our main product, micro-deployments constitute additional tools for the safeguard of your network and are distributed by NetBait Enterprise Nodes.

What is the purpose of NetBait Micro-Deployments?
The flexibility behind NetBait infrastructure may add significant security benefits to the overall pool of solutions and options at your disposal. These benefits can be generally grouped into three main categories:

  1. Security. If your organization works with a wide range of third-party vendors and requires connectivity with some of their networks, all of these connections can be considered as potential entry points for unauthorized access onto your network. Therefore, it is imperative be aware of the overall level of security on these third-party networks and to provide its own network security services and policy enforcement if necessary.
  2. Testing. If you deploy a wide variety of security tools such as IDS, it is not always clear whether these tools in fact detect attacks on a given parameter and the accuracy of their reporting. Yet the knowledge of their operational status is critical for the safeguard of the overall network.
  3. Development. NetBait is a development-friendly Linux platform, which means that once it is implemented on your site, you can create your own private and company-specific functionality that would execute any range of tasks.

Will it create additional security risks?

The NetBait platform poses no security risk to any network infrastructure by default. That said, there are certain rules implementing "no risk" functionality, including no active services, no remote administration, no local access, and configuration reload only from NetBait Enterprise. If these rules are ignored risks can be created.

Will it generate additional traffic?

Deployments can be active and passive in nature. Passive Micro-Deployments do not produce any traffic and are absolutely transparent to the host network. Active can generate traffic while performing routing, security audits, network inventory and other tasks. Traffic also depends on the number of active hosts.

What are the development requirements?

You need to host and manage your own NetBait Enterprise infrastructure. The NetBait platform itself is Linux-based, LRP (Linux Router Project) compatible.

I developed my own scripts, now what?
Upload them to your NetBait Enterprise infrastructure through the NetBait Development interface to make them a part of your solution pool.

How can I start using it?

The very same way you use NetBait: go to your NetBait web administration page, set up Hosts and additional IP addresses, and then select your solution from a list of available options.

Is there a way to share my scripts with others?

It is entirely up to you. All the scripts are adaptable to any NetBait Enterprise infrastructure, but may require minor modifications to run on different networks.
