NetBait Service FAQ

General

What is a NetBait?
NetBait is a proprietary technology developed by NetBait, Inc. to prevent, detect and analyze intruders' attacks on companies' networks. NetBait is based on the concept of a "Honeypot," which means that it is a decoy which lures intruders away from actual network data and instead gives them "bait" with false information. NetBait is a set of sophisticated technologies made seamless to license, configure, maintain and adapt to changes in any organization's network security needs.

What type of Honeypot is NetBait?
There are two general types of Honeypot systems: production for improving security and research for learning more about the sources of threats. NetBait can be configured to act as either Production or Research, or a combination of both.

Why do you refer to NetBait as a Service?
Most providers of Internet security products operate with a traditional model of software products, which means that they sell you their software, at which point you have to rely on your internal network administrators and security specialists to maintain and support this product. This is both expensive and difficult because of shortages in qualified IT staff and budgetary constraints.

In contrast, NetBait requires no internal maintenance or support. This means that our clients don't need to hir e extra staff to make sure that NetBait is properly configured and lessens risk in the overall network security infrastructure. Even an inexperienced network administrator can easily configure NetBait Service within minutes. And because of its design and functionality, NetBait does not have any of the "default" risks associated with having an Internet connected system and cannot be used against the client's network or any other resource on the Internet.

How does NetBait Service work?
The technology behind NetBait is a distributed network of multiple NetBait Nodes independently communicating with our servers and performing attack traffic redirection. Among other things, this architecture allows clients to enjoy a number of wide-reaching benefits that include configuration simplicity, the highest level of resistance to intruder attacks, and low cost of ownership.

Should NetBait be used to prevent internal or external attacks?
NetBait Service can be a critical tool against both internal and external intruders. If fact, a single NetBait Host may accomplish both tasks with proper routing.

What are the hardware and software requirements for setting up a NetBait Host?
There are no specific hardware or software requirements. The only thing you need is a Personal Computer (i386 will do) with a 1.44 floppy drive, 16MB+ RAM, a Network Interface Card and TCP/IP Internet connectivity. Practically any system up to 10 years old may be seamlessly transformed into a NetBait Host without any hardware or software preparation - just insert your NetBait floppy disk into floppy drive and reboot the PC.

Does NetBait Service work on Macintosh computers?
While the technology behind NetBait was developed to support any PC architecture to which Linux has been ported (Sun, MAC, SGI), the first release of NetBait Service is only based on the IBM-PC/i386 compatible architecture.

How do I know that my NetBait Service really works?
NetBait Service is an effective, cost-efficient and, most importantly, quiet guard of your network and its components. While taking intruders' time away from your network assets, it requires no extra time to monitor or respond to a flood of e-mails and alerts. However, there are two ways to insure your NetBait Service's proper operation:

  1. The first and most accessible method is to view the detailed log report through our online NetBait Service account profile by clicking on the Log View on the left-side menu. Every NetBait Host records all activity on assigned IP addresses and presents this activity in the easy-to-analyze format.

  2. The second method is to scan the NetBait Host and associated IP addresses by any available TCP or UDP port scanner. An administrator familiar with his/her organization's specific NetBait configuration will be able to observe the simulated TCP and UDP services on a given IP range as a result of such scan.

Fundamentals

Why would I prefer NetBait Service over NetBait Enterprise
The benefits of utilizing NetBait Service are mostly risk-related and economical. NetBait's outsourced Service model is based on the efficiency and synchronization of multiple servers that requires a great deal of attention and technical expertise. NetBait Enterprise requires the same expertise and is typically suitable only for larg er organizations.

What are the risks of using NetBait Service?
There are no known security risks. We have dedicated substantial human and capital resources to ensure the most secure operation of our network infrastructure. If our network looses its Internet connectivity because of its ISP or hardware failure, your NetBait Service will continue to work in autonomous mode until the connection is restored. Even if our internal NetBait Infrastructure network were eventually breached and compromised, an intruder would have no way to cause any damage to your host networks.

How many users can my organization have to access its NetBait Service?
Netlogiclab allows and collects information for up to three contacts, or users: technical, administrative, and billing. This is done because we understand that our clients have different people handling different tasks. A technical user, such as a network or system administrator, usually logs into the NetBait Service web interface for configuration of NetBait hosts and IP addresses. Business and billing personnel access the interface to update current billing information and invoice review. It is not required that you provide Netlogiclab with information for all three users. If your organizational needs require more than three users, contact Netlogiclab for a custom-built solution.

Will you have access to my organization's network?
No. At no time can we or anyone else view any of our clients' networks through NetBait channels.

Why should I buy NetBait instead building my own honeypot?
Regardless of your organization's network complexity, number of remote office locations, or budget, NetBait technology will adapt in the most cost-effective way. Combine this with a practic ally limitless number of possible targets for an intruder from the NetBait Service versus a typically small number of basic features from traditional homemade honeypots (mostly limited to web, FTP and e-mail servers). Finally, the buy vs. build analysis still favors NetBait Service when you consider the cost of building, maintaining and monitoring an in-house developed product as opposed to subscribing to NetBait Service.

Pricing and Packages

What is the pricing model for NetBait Service?
The pricing model is both flexible and transparent. There are only three pricing tiers:

  1. A one-time activation fee for each NetBait Host, which includes one IP address.

  2. A small monthly fee for each NetBait Host

  3. A variable monthly fee for additional IP addresses that are linked to any Host.

If you have a NetBait Unlimited package, the monthly fee does not change regardless of the NetBait Service configuration

Why do I need to pay an activation fee for each Host?
Every NetBait Host has a unique infrastructure that supports and ensures its proper operation. This includes the our server-side database, authentication procedures, behavior engine, and account configuration.

Why is there a monthly fee for NetBait Service?
With the security market highly fragmented, majority of providers have one thing in common: high upfront costs, often even higher costs for dedicated hardware and software that is compatible to their products, and high costs of maintenance and support. With NetBait Service, our clients pay only a small monthly fee. In exchange, they have the most sophisticated honeypot-based security product available, no extraordinary expenses associated with monitoring their service, and no support fees, ever. Moreover, there is no need to pre-pay for future network needs: NetBait's web-based interface enables clients to seamlessly upgrade or downgrade their configuration in real time.

Do you offer discounts to educational and non-profit (503(C)) organizations?
Yes. We discount NetBait service for these types of institutions. Contact us for more information.

Are there any other discounts for purchasing NetBait Service?
Yes. We offer two types of discounts: a volume discount and a contract discount.

What is the volume discount?
The volume discount is based on the number of IP addresses. Since the monthly fee is based on each purchased IP address, we offer significant discounts for each additional IP address, starting with the eleventh.

What is the contract discount?
The contract discount is based on the agreed upon length of subscription to NetBait Service. We offer generous discounts from the monthly fee for the entire NetBait configuration " Host(s) and IP address(es) " ranging from 5% off for a three-month contract to a 25% discount for a two-year contract. The contract discount works in combination with any applicable volume discount.

What are the different NetBait packages?
At this moment, we offer two types of packages: NetBait Service Fixed and NetBait Service Unlimited. Occasional ly, we will extend a special promotion that reflects a customized configuration, a special price, or a combination of both.

What is the NetBait Fixed package?
The NetBait Fixed package allows you to define an optimal number of NetBait Hosts and additional IP addresses. Once configured, you have the option to upgrade or downgrade your NetBait configuration, but only after contacting us first. The fee schedule is based on the number of Hosts and additional IP addresses and all applicable volume and contract discounts apply.

What is the NetBait Unlimited package?
The unlimited package option is designed for those clients that need the flexibility to upgrade or downgrade their NetBait Service configuration. There are no restrictions on the size of the NetBait Service or the number of available changes. There is a one-time activation fee and a small monthly maintenance fee. Besides the added flexibility, this option makes perfect business sense for clients whose needs exceed 4-5 hosts and 5-6 additional IP addresses. While the activation and monthly fees do not change regardless of NetBait configuration complexity, clients still receive all applicable contract discounts.

What is the Promotion Package?
Even though the NetBait Fixed and NetBait Unlimited packages are all-inclusive, Netlogiclab understands that some clients have special needs related to the terms of the desired contract and overall pricing. To receive a custom promotion code, please contact us directly.
